Nourishing Freezer-Friendly Chia Seed Jams

by Nancy Ennis

Healthy Freezer Chia Seed Jam is a wholesome and versatile spread that delivers vibrant fruit flavors without the added sugars and preservatives commonly found in store-bought jams. Crafted from a few simple ingredients—fresh or frozen fruit, chia seeds, and a natural sweetener—this homemade jam is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Chia seeds naturally thicken the jam, creating a smooth, spreadable texture without the need for pectin or excessive sugar. Whether you spread it on toast, swirl it into yogurt, or use it as a topping for oatmeal or pancakes, Healthy Freezer Chia Seed Jam provides a nutritious and delicious way to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruit, guilt-free.

Key Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or mixed berries)
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Water (as needed)

Instructions

Prepare the Fruit: If using fresh fruit, wash and hull (if needed). For larger fruits like strawberries, chop them into smaller pieces. If using frozen fruit, let it thaw slightly.

Cook the Fruit: In a small saucepan, combine the prepared fruit with about 1/4 cup of water over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the fruit softens and releases its juices, about 5-10 minutes.

Mash the Fruit: Once softened, use a fork or potato masher to mash the fruit to your preferred consistency. For a smoother jam, you can blend the mixture with an immersion blender or regular blender.

Incorporate Chia Seeds: Add chia seeds, along with honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract (if desired) to the mixture. Continue cooking on low heat, stirring regularly for another 5 minutes. The chia seeds will absorb the liquid, thickening the jam.

Adjust Sweetness: Taste the jam and, if necessary, adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or maple syrup, based on your preference.

Cool and Store: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the jam cool for a few minutes. Once cooled slightly, transfer the jam into clean glass jars or containers with tight-fitting lids. Allow the jam to cool completely before sealing the jars.

Freeze: After cooling, place the jam jars in the freezer. The jam will continue to thicken as it freezes. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months without losing its flavor or texture.

Serve: When you’re ready to enjoy, take a jar of Healthy Freezer Chia Seed Jam from the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Use the jam as a spread on toast, swirl it into yogurt, or top your favorite breakfast dishes. Relish the fresh, nutritious taste of homemade chia seed jam!
