Ticks typically don’t enter your home; instead, they search for a host to feed on, especially during the spring and summer months. These ectoparasites live outside the host’s body, surviving by feeding on its blood. While humans and animals can be potential hosts, ticks can harm the host and spread serious diseases in the process. But how long can a tick survive without a host? The answer varies. Some sources claim a tick can live for just 24 hours, while others suggest it can survive for up to two years without food. So, what’s the truth? In reality, a tick’s lifespan without a host can range from 24 hours to two years, depending on its species, environmental conditions, and lifecycle stage.
Some tick species require food more frequently to survive, while others can go longer periods without a host. Ticks have a four-stage lifecycle: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Except for the egg stage, they attach to different hosts at each stage to survive. This is why ticks are known as a three-host species. As a result, their survival rates depend heavily on the stage of their lifecycle. Let’s take a closer look at each stage of a tick’s lifecycle.
Egg Stage: After feeding on a host, a female tick lays thousands of eggs, which can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to hatch. Eggs do not require a host for feeding.
Larva Stage: Once hatched, the larva emerges from the egg. Larvae need to feed on a host to grow and can survive for several months.
Nymph Stage: After feeding on a host’s blood, the larva transforms into a nymph. Nymphs also require hosts to feed on and continue their growth. They can survive anywhere from several months to a year.
Adult Stage: Following another blood meal, nymphs become adult ticks. Adult ticks need larger hosts to get enough blood for survival and reproduction. Depending on host availability and environmental conditions, adult female ticks can live for several months to a few years, while adult males typically survive for a shorter period.
The American dog tick has a remarkable ability to survive longer than many other tick species. Its larvae can live for up to 540 days without feeding on a host, while nymphs can survive for as long as 584 days without a meal. Adult American dog ticks have an even more impressive survival rate, living for 2 to 3 years, or up to 1,053 days, without a host.
Blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, typically feed on white-tailed deer when they reach adulthood, which is why they’re called deer ticks. During the larval stage, they require a single feeding from June to September. If larvae don’t find a host during this period, their survival rate drops to less than a year. Nymphs feed during the summer months, and if they don’t find a host in the first season, they can only survive for two more seasons. In autumn, they become fully grown adults and remain on a host through the spring. Adult deer ticks can survive for less than a year without a host.
An adult female brown dog tick can lay between 1,000 to 3,000 tiny, dark brown eggs at once. After hatching, the larvae can survive for up to seven to eight months without food or water. Brown dog tick nymphs can live for up to three months without a host. Adult brown dog ticks typically choose dogs as their hosts and can survive for up to 18 months without a blood meal.
An adult female Rocky Mountain wood tick lays around 3,000 to 5,000 eggs at once. The eggs typically hatch within 7 to 38 days, and once hatched, the larvae quickly search for a nearby host. While a Rocky Mountain wood tick usually needs to feed within 30 days, it can survive for up to 117 days without a host. In comparison, nymphs can live for more than 300 days without attaching to a host. Adult Rocky Mountain wood ticks can survive even longer—up to about 600 days.
Similar to Rocky Mountain wood ticks, a female lone star tick lays around 3,000 to 5,000 eggs at a time. After hatching, the larvae can survive for up to 279 days. The nymphs of the lone star tick can live for more than a year—typically up to 476 days—without attaching to a host. Meanwhile, adult lone star ticks can survive for up to 430 days without feeding.
Ticks can transmit several serious diseases to humans and animals, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. Lyme disease can cause severe illness in humans, with recovery potentially taking weeks or even months, and some individuals may experience long-term symptoms. Similarly, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, another dangerous tick-borne illness, can lead to fever, headaches, and rashes from tick bites. Without proper treatment, these diseases can pose significant health risks.
