Ingredients for Savory Mushroom Stuffing

  • 8 cups cubed bread (French or sourdough, preferably day-old)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500g mushrooms (cremini or button), sliced
  • 2 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 tsp dried sage
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1-2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the cubed bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the bread is lightly toasted and crisp. Once done, remove from the oven and transfer the toasted cubes to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook the Mushrooms: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the onions and celery. Stir occasionally and cook until the mushrooms turn golden brown and any liquid evaporates, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Season: Sprinkle the thyme, sage, and rosemary over the mushroom mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine and cook for an additional minute to release the herbs’ flavors.
  5. Combine with Bread: Pour the mushroom mixture over the toasted bread cubes in the bowl. Gently toss everything together, ensuring the bread is evenly coated with the mushroom and herb mixture.
  6. Moisten with Broth: Gradually pour the vegetable or chicken broth over the bread mixture, stirring gently to combine. Add enough broth to moisten the stuffing to your desired texture, ensuring it remains moist but not soggy.
  7. Bake: Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Afterward, remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve: Let the stuffing cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot as a perfect side dish for your favorite main course.
  9. Enjoy: Savor the rich and flavorful Easy Mushroom Stuffing, a delicious blend of savory mushrooms, aromatic herbs, and tender bread—a perfect addition to any holiday meal or family gathering!
